In this episode, I’m walking you through how to build generosity into your business—right from the beginning.

We talk about:

  • why waiting until you make more money to give doesn’t really work
  • how to choose what matters to you and where you want your money to go
  • different ways to give (percentages, free spots, supporting causes, everyday generosity)
  • and how creating this kind of “flow” can actually make your business feel more alive and aligned

I also share some personal stories—from a conversation that shaped my path into entrepreneurship, to real ways I’ve experimented with giving inside my own business.

If you’ve ever felt like you want your business to be about more than just making money… this one’s for you.

Hey friends, welcome back to the podcast. Welcome back to Brave Little Things. So happy you're here. We're gonna have some good, juicy conversation today about creating a generous business. How we can be generous within our businesses. I'm excited about it. And before we jump in, I just wanted to actually share that there's a fun bonus happening for the month of May in my business, talking about little generous stuff happening. If you choose to jump into one-on-one coaching with me during the month of May, there's an extra bonus happening, which is that you will get hand-delivered right to your door a beautiful, soulful scheduling workbook. It is a system that I have used for the past, I don't know, five, six years that I also teach my clients. And it is a five-step system that really teaches you exactly how to create the results and the things in your life that you want to create while also ensuring that you are very well taken care of and you are very nourished and you are very seen. And I think this is a hard combination because I think us adults have a lot of have a hard time pausing and thinking that there's time for this and there's time for that, and this schedule system really allows you to recognize and see that you've got time. You just have to know how to use it. So that is a special bonus. If you're interested, you would just hop on a consult with me. I'll put the link in the show notes, which is just tomarcoaching.com slash consult. It will have a little conversation, and if you decide to move forward, then you will get that special bonus just for you. So can't wait for that. Anyways, want to jump into this conversation today, creating a generous business. And I want to say that I'm like kind of in the middle of this myself. So I'm not the end, I'm like in the middle, and I'll tell you what that means in a moment. But I just want to kind of get this idea out here on the podcast, get your brain juices going as well to be thinking about it for yourselves. But, you know, when I had first decided to become a life coach, I, you know, I might have spoken about this on the podcast before, but I basically had two avenues I was going, two directions I was checking out. When I was like deciding like what I want to be when I grew up. And so one place I was looking was in international development work. The other one, I wasn't so clear, but it's something to do with therapy or something like that, because I'd, you know, been a therapist, a social worker, and things like that. Anyway, so I decided to give myself two weeks for each one just to really go into like learning about them and then make a decision. So the first two weeks were international development work, and I got myself a coffee date with this really amazing woman who started this organization in India where she collected all the old soaps and shampoos from the hotel that were not used, like the ones that were still closed that people would just kind of throw out. And she took all of them, her and her people, down to the slums of Mumbai and taught people about hygiene and you know how to take care of themselves and gave them these shampoos and these soaps and things like that. In addition, she was sharing with me that she was in the midst of also starting to create a program where she was giving seed money to women in third world countries to start their own businesses. So I immediately told her, like, I definitely want in, this is amazing. And I was just like blown away. And she it was the same conversation with the same woman that she also then pointed me in the direction of, and this was just a side thought because we were just like getting along so well and just ended up like having this like conversation about many things, but she told me all this podcast I should listen to, which at that point I had not listened to one podcast. And so I jotted it down and I literally was like, Well, how do I listen to a podcast? And ChatGBT was not around then, so I was like, Well, what are my brother-in-law is a podcast listener, so I asked him, like, how do I listen to a podcast? Anyways, ended up listening to a podcast. It turned out to be a coach, a life coach, who I then became my life coach, who became the life coach that certified me, and that's a whole other story. But bottom line is that I decided to go the life coach direction for many reasons. But one of them was like, oh, I could do both. I could create this business, and on the side, I could then also create an organization where I'm like, you know, giving out seed money to third world country women in third world countries to help build their businesses or something like that. And I was so taken by that idea of being able to run a business and also run a movement and also to be giving back in that kind of way. Anyway, I, like probably many other entrepreneurs, maybe like yourselves, I had all of these, you know, high hopes and these ideas and these thoughts and got totally lost in the hustle of the business, of creating clients, of making money, of figuring this out, of learning how to do this and all these kinds of things. And yes, I did do things that were very generous. I put certain packages aside, you know, for a quite some time for single moms and folks who really are like financially struggling to be able to coach with me and things like that. But I never really put a significant amount of money aside to do things, which by the way, the package also, putting packages aside also very is a is a beautiful way to give um from your business. But anyway, so that so that's the piece. So I I really was like, okay, you know what? And I was having a conversation with someone. The reason it came up, I was talking to someone, and this story of this woman in India came up, and I was like, I kind of caught myself like a deer in headlights. I was like, oh my God, I wanted to do this and I haven't yet. Like, this is so good to like remember, and let's talk about on the podcast. So here we are talking on the podcast about all this about, you know, really creating this generous gener generosity within the business. So, you know, I want to say there's also like, you know, I'll say this the the notion of like giving in your in your business, I think is a really beautiful thing. I coach, you know, I coach entrepreneurs and I coach a lot of kind-hearted, sweet, loving people. And a lot of my people have a hard time receiving money, making money, wanting to make money, you know, wanting to make sales, and and I mean they want to, but then they like kind of hold themselves back because they equate money with evil, rich people, evil, selfish, all these kinds of things. And I do a lot of coaching on this. And what we come to, what they eventually come to, is a beautiful place of recognizing that the more people, the more, sorry, good people, kind-hearted people that have money in their hands, the better off we are. The more folks who have money in their hands, who have plans of doing beautiful things with it, right? Not necessarily just spending it on yachts and things like that, the better the world will be. And so that idea and that notion really helps people kind of like get behind the idea of like, okay, I do want to be making money. And and maybe and money, I could see how I could take money. Right, money is completely neutral. It is not good, it's not bad, it's a totally neutral resource. We decide what we want to do with it. We decide how we want to think about it, right? So, anyway, so this notion, I want to put it out there. I want to talk about it because I myself also want to kind of think about it and how I want to do it. But one idea simply is just like putting a particular percentage aside to want to donate at the end of the month or the end of the year of how much of, you know, from your how much you're making and putting some money aside to give to, let's say, an organization. Now, I want to propose for those who are like, you know, just starting off or making a certain kind of money, that even you, one percent is such a beautiful thing. A lot of us are, you know, think like, okay, when I'm making it totally, I'm all about it. When I'm really bringing in the money, a hundred percent. Then I'm gonna give like thirty percent and it's gonna be a huge amount. But don't start there. Start now. Start today. I'm going to start today by giving like one percent. First of all, it's also easier on your system because when you get to that place, right, than going from all of a sudden then like giving a huge amount, the 30%, you know, it's like it really could be a huge jump. But also because one percent is a beautiful place to go. And it's uh it starts to generate this flow, right? Money is about flowing, it's about going in and coming out. It's about going in and coming out, right? It's about connection. We get to use it as connecting to other people, other humans on this planet. And even one percent could do that, right? We also could do it, like I mentioned before, putting certain packages aside, or if we're artists, or you know, we we are, you know, you sell things like ceramics or things like that, or beauty products, right? Donating a certain amount to people or to a gallery or to whoever that you that you think that would could really use it and not be able to financially purchase it right now, right? But we can do it in these kinds of ways. And I'll say for those folks who are kind of holding on to kind of like I'm I imagine that a huge thing in your mind is like you can't do it, you know, like if you only have a certain amount of money coming in, you know, what is 1% really gonna do? But I'll say this, I'll tell you this really fun story. Okay, last week my husband and I went to a cafe to work. I went off to do some videos and content creating and whatever it is, and 45 minutes later I come back to see my husband and like all these folks around the table, like laughing and smiling and talking to him and whatever. And so I come over to him and I said, like, what is going on here? What's happening? And he explained to me that he decided when I was away that he like while I was off doing the market the content creating that he was going to go secretly to the owner of the cafe and tell him that he wanted to buy everybody's lunch who was there. I think it was like four or five couples. And then he also gave the owner himself a hundred shekel, which then turned out to be the owner's birthday. So he was very touched. Anyways, to say the least, these people were so grateful and so appreciative and were just like, wow, thank you for reminding me. There are good people in the world, and we're just so touched by it. And we're sharing that with my husband. And so, like, even that, right, even if you don't like feel like you have enough to give to an organization or whatever it is, then go and surprise somebody by paying for their lunch. Or, you know, the guy who's, you know, in the movie, you know, you're in line for a movie and pay for the person behind you, right? Just by bringing like happiness and joy to the world in different kinds of ways, that's a beautiful way to give as well. So there's like lots, and listen, there's also, by the way, probably a million of ideas I don't even have yet. I would love to hear, if you have some new ideas, some fresh ideas of how you can like be generous inside of your business and create generosity, email them to me. Or, you know, hop on Instagram and send me a DM. I would love to hear more ideas. These are just some of them, the the some ones that I came up with, but I'm sure you guys all have amazing ideas as well. But the notion here is that like, do we want to be just building businesses or do we want to be building movements? Right? And I know for myself I want to be building something so much more that I love that I can serve and give to my people, my own clients, and and be here. But I get to also spread that even far beyond them. The money that I bring in because of them, I can help spread beyond them, which I love that idea, right? I know my own one of my own coaches, she is she's she's definitely is doing good, and she lives in Hawaii, and her husband is a regenerative farmer, and she they have recently purchased land that he's also been working and like planting trees and just food, you know. And they bought this land that they are going to be giving to the native Hawaiians one day, like I guess when the when the farm is like fully built there, but to help, you know, feed and grow. And I don't know if it's for a community or individual families or whatever it is, but that's what she did with her money. And that is so beautiful. So not only is she helping other folks, you know, by coaching them and doing all those kinds of things, but then she's also able to purchase land and make her community, you know, brighter, stronger, wealthier, you know, all those kinds of things. And so we get to take what we do and make it even greater, right? If you think you're serving now, imagine what's gonna happen. If you decide that you want to, you know, bring in even more generosity. And I'm gonna tell you also, if you decide that you don't want to do this, that is fine too. It is absolutely okay for us to want to build businesses and feed our families, because that is enough, right? That is enough. That is a beautiful thing to do in the world as well. But these are just ideas if you want to do, if you want to kind of, you know, bring it up a level, or I don't say bring it up a level, but if you want to like add to this, these are just kind of what's been brewing in my mind and you know what I've been thinking about. So listen, it all has to be really individual because what's you know important to you is maybe not important to me and vice versa. Like what what where we want to be giving? And it could be giving in that's directly connected to our own businesses. Like I know, for example, you know, for all those birth workers out there, I know there's an or an amazing organization that I had given to um a while back who buys and purchases bikes for midwives in third world countries so they can get to their births safely. You know, a lot of women like in Africa or whatever will have to kind of hitch rides, sometimes, you know, in the middle of the night or whatever, to be with their women and things can happen and all the different things. And so they their thing was that they they purchased bikes and gave it to women all over the third world country so they could be independent, which I loved. How good is that, you guys? But it has to be what you want, right? Whether it be connected to your business or just connected to something you love in life. So really ask yourselves, you know, a couple questions. Ask yourself what actually matters to me? Like what really actually matters to me and where would I want my money to go? No matter if it is ten dollars or ten million dollars, where would I want my money to go? Right? Kind of take keeping the price, how much, the the number aside, where would I want it to go? What would feel meaningful and what would feel fun? Right? We want to really get clear for ourselves what is meaningful to us because you know that will be directly obviously linked to like where we want to be giving. And you also could give, you know, one month, one place, and another month, another place, and even try it out, see what you would want to do. But I think it's just a fun additional kind of thing that we can do to kind of like, you know, bring more excitement, bring more joy, definitely bring more abundance and flow into our businesses. So I'm just putting it out there on the podcast because I've been thinking about it, I've been rethinking about it and really trying to figure out for myself what how I want to bump up my generosity in my business. And so I thought that this would be a fun conversation for you here as well. So that's what I got for you guys today. I love you all so much. Have a beautiful day. If you've got more ideas, again, that were not shared on the podcast in terms of where else you can pour out the generosity, I would love to hear them for real. I really would. So come hang out with me on on Instagram or, you know, in my email. And love you guys. Have a beautiful day. I will see you next week. Love y'all.
